What is Ganglion Cyst?

Ganglion cysts in the hand or wrist region are swellings seen near joints or around the tendons.

Most common regions:

  • Over the wrist joint
  • On the inner side of the wrist
  • On the basis of the fingers
  • Over the small joints of the fingers

Ganglion cysts can be likened to a balloon filled with jelly like liquid and a stalk. The causes of these cysts are generally unclear. However, because they are near attachment of the ligaments around the joints, it is often thought to be due to mechanical changes and irritation of the tendons. These cysts may vary in size over time. They can show growth, they can sometimes shrink in time and disappear completely. Ganglia may be painful or they may not give any complaints. These cysts are not malignant lesions; they do not spread to another part of the body.

How is Ganglion Diagnosed?

  • Because of its characteristic features, physical examination findings are sufficient for diagnosis:
  • They are generally well rounded, soft, mobile, bounded and smooth surfaced.
  • While the ones on the basis of the finger may be stiff, the ones over the wrist joint can be different in shapes, softer, mobile or fixed.
  • Some cysts may develop on the joints with degenerative changes.
  • If a radiological examination is required, ganglion cysts are easily seen in magnetic resonance imaging.

How is Ganglion Treated?

They often require no surgery and are just monitored by observation. However, if the ganglion cysts are painful, or limit the movements of the joint which they are affected, or if they are cosmetically unacceptable, other treatments may take into consideration.

What are the non-operative treatment options in Ganglion Disorder?

  • Use of splints – can improve the quality of active daily living.
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs – can relieve pain, improve the quality of active daily living.
  • Aspiration of the liquid with the injector – It can provide temporary comfort.
  • If non-operative treatment options are not efficient to control the pain, or if the cysts are frequently recurred, surgical treatment alternatives may take into consideration. Open removal of the entire cyst or endoscopic surgeries with arthroscopic techniques are possible.
